Wow, time really does fly… it feels like just yesterday I was picking up my first DS, and yes it was a Phat DS. When I opened it up and turned it on for the first time I was completely blown away. Never was I expecting how well the touchscreen would work, or the fact that a microphone could enhance gameplay even further. After a few hours of use I knew right away that Nintendo had created yet another masterpiece, and boy was I ever right..
Nintendo has sold through 114 million units of the little guy and so far there seems to be no end in sight. The DS has seen a number of revisions, with the latest being the DS XL, which continually ups the ante in the number of features the handheld can provide to portable gaming. We’ve seen hundreds upon hundreds of games that are absolutely incredible and would have no home anywhere else but on the DS. It’s great that the platform has reached such a nice maturity level, but at the same time that worries me.
I know hardware can’t last forever but this whole Wii/DS combo is quite possibly Nintendo’s best combination since the NES/Gameboy. It just works perfectly as a tag team and has proven thus far that Nintendo’s innovation is what keeps the company moving forward. The future is uncertain as to what will come next, and it will be sad to say goodbye when the time comes, but I’m quite confident that my favourite game developer/ hardware manufacturer will pull through and come out swinging when the time comes. Happy gaming!
